The Halo Infinite early tests have continued to be a good indicator that the feel of the multiplayer for this installment is 343’s best yet, and perhaps the best has series has felt since Halo 3 itself.
It has been…fun, monitoring the conversation around the game and seeing detractors find fault with it. We can debate things like time-to-kill or map design, but some of the most “viral” criticisms of Halo Infinite are just plain hilarious.
We are a long way from the Infinite campaign demo that more or less everyone thought looked pretty bad, and while we’re still waiting to see another preview of that, here’s what some people are complaining about now.
Tire Physics, the idea here being that GTA games can pop tires that go flat, rather than Infinite’s Warthog tires which explode completely. I feel like tires…can actually do this, but here we are:
Palm Tree Collision, where one player is able to get through one object that they’re probably not supposed to.
Fruit Explosions, the tweet that started it all, comparing how you can individually shoot pieces of fruit in other games, but Halo’s fruit blows up…all at once! The horror.
I am not immune to the fact that these tweets are from CAPITALLETTERSNUMBERS console war soldier accounts that are fishing for controversy, though I do find it rather funny that Halo has now gotten to such a good state where this is what’s being used as ammo.
Meanwhile, here’s what actual people who make actual video games are discussing, where no such cross-platform rivalries really exist among those making the games. This is a Sony Santa Monica dev talking about how much Halo Infinite gets right when it comes to first person play, and how hard that is to do. It’s a whole thread worth reading.
The obvious answer to the meme “Halo lacks detail” tweets is the fact that the type of game and the engine relay what you need to prioritize. In the fast-paced world of Halo multiplayer combat, it doesn’t really matter if you can shoot individual fruit or if they disappear all at once. In reality, they don’t need to be interactable at all. Destiny 2 comes to mind as a game that has essentially zero destruction physics in its PvP or PvE worlds, as it’s focused on how your guns impact enemies, not the world around you. And no one seems to mind.
We will see how the re-debut of the campaign goes, which I think players were right to be concerned about a year ago, given how it looked. That wasn’t nitpicking, it was more or less the entire package. I expect similar improvements to have been made there but no, fruit physics is probably not on the priority fix list.
