A truck hauling bananas rolled over on the Massachusetts Turnpike Sunday morning, shutting down lanes and diverting traffic for several hours.
No injuries were reported at the crash in the area of Exit 18 eastbound — the Brighton/Cambridge exit on Interstate 90 — but the bananas could not be saved, according to Massachusetts State Police.
“Lanes will probably be closed for 1-2 more hours while the truck is upright and removed,” Massachusetts State Police tweeted around 12:30 p.m. “Troopers from State Police-Tunnels diverting traffic.
“EB lanes closed and diverted around Exit 28 and one WB lane closed. In more bad news, bananas have to be condemned,” police added.
Initially, police said there was no fuel spill, but then the truck began to leak fuel.
“@BostonFire laid down absorbent to stop spread. Remaining fuel being pumped out,” police tweeted. “Hazmat Techs will remain to supervise the cleanup.”
