While the border with the U.S. is currently closed to non-essential travel, there remains the possibility it could be brought into Canada on a vehicle or on an imported item.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is aware of the threat and asks the public to report to it any suspected sightings.

The adult is about 25 mm long and 12 mm wide and has spotted light brown or grey front wings and red rear wings, while the nymphs are black and white or black, white and red.

People who live or vacation in areas of acute SLF infestion in the eastern U.S. need to be careful about moving items that might carry the egg masses, Ehnes said.

“They don’t realize it but they might be bringing a barbeque back home that’s full of eggs,” she said. “They’ll lay it on trees, they’ll lay it on patio stones, patio furniture. We saw one image of a woman’s straw hat that had an egg mass on it.

“If you leave it out, they’ll find it and they’ll lay eggs on it … that’s how they believe they actually arrived in North America — a couple of egg masses, just a couple, that were laid on landscaping stones that were sent to Pennsylvania from China.”
