Professor Penny Kris-Etherton of Penn State university, an author of the study that was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, said: "While the avocados did not affect belly fat or weight gain, the study still provides evidence that avocados can be a beneficial addition to a well-balanced diet.

"Incorporating an avocado per day in this study did not cause weight gain and also caused a slight decrease in LDL cholesterol, which are all important findings for better health."

The trial, which was performed in 2022, was the reported largest study about the health benefits of avocados - which are actually considered a fruit.

For six months in total, 923 participants were split into two groups - where one group ate avocados each day and the other, none at all. Their cholesterol levels were measured through the testing period, and those who ate the avocados had less LDL cholesterol.

However, the claims in this study were rebuked by other experts at the time. NutritionFacts.org reports that the studies may see a reduction in “bad” cholesterol due to the cutting down of animal fats.

The nutrition website also argued that avocados don't contain enough LDL cholesterol to have enough of an impact. While this may be true or false, it is a well-known fact that avocados are packed with nutrients that include folate, magnesium and phosphorus.

These vitamins and minerals are vital for many functions in the body, and are overall linked to well-being.

People should consume avocados as part of a well-balanced diet, as this is the best opportunity to look after their health and wellbeing.

According to the NHS, to lower your cholesterol levels, you should consume less meat pies, fatty meat and sausages. They also recommend against consuming too much butter, as well as cream and hard cheese.

You can still have foods that contain a healthier type of fat called unsaturated fat. Other foods you may want to avoid when it comes to cholesterol levels include:

  • Cakes
  • Biscuits
  • Food containing coconut oil
  • Palm oil

The NHS recommends to eat more:

  • oily fish, like mackerel and salmon
  • brown rice, bread and pasta
  • nuts and seeds
  • fruits and vegetables

Exercising more will also benefit you, and people should aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise per week, according to the NHS. They also recommended quitting smoking and cutting down to no more than 14 units of alcohol a week.
