The Springs open air produce market, the Fruit Basket, has opened a new off-shoot shop called the Basket at 18460 Sonoma Highway. The store offers money transfer via Western Union, bill paying and U-Haul truck rentals. In addition, the small storefront sells a seriously wide variety of items ― everything from small kitchen appliances to clothing to cleaning supplies, knives, fans, watches, nail polish, feminine products. The list goes on.
“I wanted to offer services that are not readily available in this neighborhood,” said co-owner Omar Homran. “And once people are in there, it seems to make sense to offer them products they want to pick up at the same time.”
“So far, so good,” says Homran. “Our customers come in and say I have everything I need.”
Previously in the spot was Sonoma’s Barber Garage, closed for many months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and now permanently.
“I wanted to expand and I wanted to help the barbershop owner to get out of his lease,” said Homran, who lives in Sonoma and owns both businesses with his brother Joewad.
As for the brothers’ 24101 Arnold Drive location, Homran said that it is now selling a handful of the same items as its Springs location, and will add more based on demand.
The Homrans’ Arnold Drive Fruit Basket location added U-Haul services in 2020. While the property has been for sale for $5.5 million more than five years, the Homrans recently signed a new two-year lease and Omar says they have no plans to leave the spot.
The Basket is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
