More than 700 cargo trucks carrying fruits were trapped at the border crossings of Kyinsankyawt and Pangsaing (Kyugok) in Muse Township, northern Shan State, are suffering losses due to delays in entering and leaving China.

"Every day there are small problems at the border crossing. Part of the reason is because there are many fruit trucks. Now, more than 600 to 700 trucks are stuck. They have to enter the queue and cause delays. Therefore, we face the risk of product damage and loss," the local fruit merchant Nam Kham Khin said.

Despite the high prices these melons fetch, after a replacement driver tested positive for Covid-19, only about 80 cargo trucks were allowed to enter and leave China. Businesses are facing the challenge of aggravating the political situation.

“[The] melon market is good. But, not many trucks cannot enter China after a driver was infected with the virus. There are about 600 cargo trucks outside. Yet, only about 80 can enter. Their replaced drives prioritize their goods only. Trade is not easy. We also have difficulty with the banking system. This is not a good sign for merchants,” said Sai Khin Maung, vice chair of Muse 105th Mile Fruit Wholesale.
