After losing her teacher assistant job because of the pandemic, Monica Fuentes decided to fulfill a longtime dream and open up a juice and smoothie shop in a community she knew could benefit from it.
"When you think of the Lackland area, you think it's so far, and there's nothing over there. That's why I wanted to bring my healthy option over there," Fuentes, 26, said about her new venture, Coco Bliss, located on 5032 W. Military Dr., not far from the Lackland Air Force Base.
Starting Saturday, April 17, at 11 a.m., customers can enjoy everything Coco Bliss offers, such as fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies, and acaí bowls. The first 50 guests will receive free T-shirts or a tote bag.
For those who love a cute photo, there's also a lovely swing with a "Treat Yourself" backdrop to take Insta-worthy pics inside the shop, Fuentes said, adding she knew she wanted a backdrop to bring peeps in.

With everything coming to fruition, Fuentes can't help but think, "everything truly happens for a reason." She said she was able to find herself and figure out what she truly was passionate, which is juicing.
"Due to COVID-19, it brought me to a different direction in life," she said. "It was a bad time in general and good for me to find myself and what I want to do."
Thankfully, Fuentes said she learned quite a bit from her parents, who own Puerto Rican restaurant El Coquí, also in the Lackland area. The new business owner said her family inspired her to make her healthy vision come to life.
"I've watched them own this business growing up, and it kind of pushed me in a way to also bring something to this side of town," Fuentes said. "There aren't many healthy options over here, so now you can have something that tastes good but is also good for you.
While there, Fuentes said her favorite is the Coco Greens juice (spinach, cucumber, green apple, pineapple, lemon, ginger, and celery) and the Coco Bliss bowl (coconut base, granola, strawberry pineapple, banana, Nutella, honey, and cacao nibs). However, she said you can create your own bowl if you want as well.
