A father and his 10-year-old son were critically injured in a targeted shooting while they were ordering food from a fruit stand in Long Beach on Friday, Sept. 3, authorities said.
The shooting occurred near the intersection of Orange Avenue and Market Street in North Long Beach about 6:15 p.m., Long Beach police spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria said.
More than one suspect approached the man, 48, and the boy and opened fire, before running off, Chavarria said. A specific number of suspects was not known.
Investigators said they believe the father was targeted, Chavarria said. Further information about the victims was not immediately available.
Various items could be seen strewn about the sidewalk in front of the portable fruit stand, which was set up near the parking lot of a laundromat near the southwest corner of the intersection.
It was unknown if other people were around the fruit stand when the gunfire broke out. Officers, while conducting safety checks, found a vehicle also had been struck by gunfire, Chavarria said.
Further information regarding a motive was not immediately released.
