Robert Saleh knows energy, and he believes Shaq Lawson is going to bring a lot of it to the Jets.

“This dude, when he gets comfortable, is going to bring so much juice and energy to this defense,” Saleh said Monday. “He’s a ball of energy. His relentless style of play, the energy he brings – he plays with effort. He does all of it.”

It’s too early to tell if Lawson, acquired in a trade with the Texans on Aug. 29, will fill directly into the role vacated by Carl Lawson’s season-ending injury. But the new Lawson will play a good amount in the Jets’ defensive end rotation. He, along with John Franklin-Myers, Bryce Huff and Tim Ward, fill out a unit that will be critical to the Jets’ pass-rushing and run-stuffing defense. The group isn’t as deep as it was when the other Lawson and Vinny Curry were still options, but the newest Lawson still brings speed and disruption to the line.

Lawson isn’t a big star, but he played well during his first five seasons in the NFL. He’s totaled 20.5 sacks in his career and 48 quarterback hits in the past three seasons alone. The Jets traded a 2022 sixth-rounder for him.

“Just to have him in there, a professional football player who’s had a lot of success in this league, to add to the depth of that d-line room, is a big plus,” Saleh added.

Lawson himself is equally as excited to play in New York. He said last week that he was “very happy” and “excited” when he learned the Texans traded him to the Jets. This was partly because of Saleh and his sideline energy, Lawson said, as well as the defense the Jets run under Jeff Ulbrich.

“This defense, you don’t gotta go think,” Lawson said. “You can just go attack and be aggressive. It takes the thinking out of football. That’s what I mean by being myself.”
