Heron Talk presented by Gallagher

Inter Miami is currently preparing for its first game out of the two scheduled for this week, flying over the border into Canada at BMO Field to face off against Toronto FC on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Inter Miami has earned 21 points over the past 10 games - tied for second-most in MLS in that gamespan (only behind first-place New England and tied with the Colorado Rapids) - is on a five-match unbeaten run and has suffered only one loss in the last 10 games. Christian Makoun asserted that the team’s current success has much less to do with luck, and more to do with the preparations they’ve committed to all season.

“For me the term ‘streak’ is a word that I don’t particularly enjoy because it comes off as, ‘they’ve had a bit of luck,’ or we are having a moment of luck, and that’s the reason they’re winning. I believe that this momentum has been the fruit of our labors that we’ve dedicated to since the beginning of the season, although we initially could not see it but now it’s evident. So, more than us having a ‘streak’ it’s us having our moment.”

The defender went on to emphasize that the team needs to remain focused on the big picture when looking ahead at the upcoming matches for the remainder of the season.

“We’ve found the way to do things correctly. We’ve found ourselves at the goal, and there’s nothing else now except confronting each matchup individually,” said Makoun. “Right now we’re focused on the next game that is coming up, which is against Toronto, and coming out of that match up with a positive result. We’re so close to our principal objective and I believe that with the team we have we’ll get there.”

Head coach Phil Neville spoke highly of the Venezuelan defender, and about the journey Makoun undertook to become the impactful player that he is for the Club.

“[He got here] by telling him he needs to drive his standards, by having him back for double sessions, by driving him every single day with his work ethic. He is an absolute fitness machine now. He is now at the level where he can cope with playing MLS games. He is now at the level now where technically, tactically, mentally, he can play in any league in this world.”

In addition, Neville spoke about the challenge the team will face in the upcoming matchup against Toronto.

“We’ve got obviously a big road game tomorrow night against Toronto. We’re playing against a team that’s going through a difficult period. A team that when you look at their roster, it should be a team that probably should be in the playoff position.”

Neville also addressed the momentum that the team is currently experiencing with its latest string of wins, and the condensed schedule that awaits them.

“We’re going to have a team tomorrow night that will be fresh. We’re going to have a team tomorrow night full of confidence and belief and we want to keep this momentum going now. The games are coming thick and fast. Two, three days between each game now means that the freshest and most physical team and the next strongest team will win these games and it’s one that we’re looking forward to.”

Tuesday’s match will be broadcast live regionally on CBS4, CW34, UniMás and the Inter Miami App. Fans worldwide can follow live updates including video highlights and stats on the Club’s App. Download and Register your Profile here: https://www.intermiamicf.com/en/club/app.
