HILLSDALE COUNTY, MI -- Meckley’s Flavor Fruit Farm is not your typical orchard.
While apples, pumpkins, cider and doughnuts are a big part of the business, Meckley’s, located in Somerset Center, about 13 miles south of Jackson, has branched out in recent years by adding a cidery and brewery complete with a beer garden.
Eight hard ciders and eight craft beers are always on tap, manager Lindsay Meckley said. The business started making hard cider in 2013 and making beer in 2019.
“We actually made the transition to being open year round after adding the brewery,” Meckley said. “Which has been great. Now we are open not just seasonally but year round.”
The pub offers pizzas with homemade dough and fresh toppings, along with other bar food items like cheese bread, calzones and pretzels with homemade beer cheese.
The bakery features a variety of doughnuts, breads and pies. The most popular are the doughnuts, Meckley said. Come holiday time, pies are a big seller.
October is a big month at Flavor Fruit Farms as it celebrates its 65th anniversary on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9-10, with the Apple Smorgasbord. Apples are the star with apple butter, apple slushies, caramel apple dumplings, fresh apple cider, caramel apples, apple pies and more available. Food trucks will also be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Anyone can eat any of the food anywhere,” Meckley said. “They are welcome to eat the food truck food (in the tap room), on the patio or in the beer garden.”
Major events are also planned on other weekends throughout October. A corn maze, wagon rides, an animal exhibit and pick-your-own apples are also available.
