A 20-year study by researchers at the University of Michigan has suggested that you may lose up to 36 minutes of life after eating just one hot dog, while other foods can actually ‘add’ time to your life. These researchers studied 5,800 commonly eaten foods.

If you’re thinking, “That’s OK, I hate hot dogs, I’ll just eat chicken wings.” Slow down, this study also says that wingies will subtract over three minutes off of your life.

I love wings. I love hot dogs. I’ve eaten so many of both that according to this study, I probably should have died before I was born. I wonder if there are any foods that you can eat to ADD time to my life? These researchers say that these foods do exist…and you might have one growing in your backyard.

WALNUTS

Snacking on a handful of walnuts just five times a week could add an extra 1.3 years to your life. Walnuts are high in healthy fats, as well as being a rich source of magnesium, fiber, and protein.

Fun Fact: A walnut is actually a FRUIT.

Eating five or more portions of walnuts a week reduced the participants' risk of dying from any cause by 14% over the two decades, AND eating walnuts cut the odds of cardiovascular death by 25%.

There are two major species of walnuts, the English walnut, and the black walnut.

The Black Walnut is found in all 99 counties in Iowa and is one of the best-known nut species to grow in the state. The United States accounts for nearly one-third of the global production of walnuts. California is the country’s top walnut-producing state. China is the top walnut-producing country in the world with the United States at #2.

But not every living thing benefits from walnuts. Black walnut roots produce chemicals called juglones which are very toxic to some plants like azaleas, blueberries, peonies and tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes. Most of the toxicity is limited to within the drip line of the tree.

Small Town Iowa: Road Trip to Pella - Photos

When you mention Pella, most people say "they have all the tulips right?" Where that would be correct, there is so much more to this town. Pella is also home to two manufacturing companies, a college, the largest working windmill in the U.S. and it's the boyhood home of the legendary Wyatt Earp. Now, let's go on a virtual tour of this excellent example of picturesque small-town Iowa.

Many of the included towns jump out at the casual observer as popular summer-rental spots--the Ozarks' Branson, Missouri, or Arizona's Lake Havasu--it might surprise you to dive deeper into some quality-of-life offerings beyond the beach and vacation homes. You'll likely pick up some knowledge from a wide range of Americana: one of the last remaining 1950s-style drive-ins in the Midwest; a Florida town that started as a Civil War veteran retirement area; an island boasting some of the country's top public schools and wealth-earners right in the middle of a lake between Seattle and Bellevue; and even a California town containing much more than Johnny Cash's prison blues.
