I’m a sucker for packaging. Anytime an ice cream container is bright and colorful or features the terms new or limited edition I tend to pay attention. When I saw the selection of pints from The Frozen Farmer I was intrigued by the colorful packaging featuring fruit.
The brand was founded by a third-generation family-run farm and uses “misfit fruit” ie. fruit that is too imperfect for sale at a market, but is still perfectly good and edible and turns it into frozen dairy desserts including flavors like strawberry cheesecake, blueberry strudel and my selection for today - orange cream.
Here we have a a traditional orange cream dessert combining the citrus taste of oranges with a hint of vanilla. I really wanted this to be better than it was. It smells sweet and citrusy, but when I bit into it the vanilla flavor over powered the oranges so that it lacked that tang that you get from fresh fruit. I was also hoping the texture would be creamy since it is a sorbet and ice cream combo, but it was slightly icy. I’m not sure if that is a freezer burn issue or just how the pint normally tastes, but I didn’t see any signs of freezer burn on the container or on the top layer of the desert.
Overall, it was not a bad dessert. Orange cream is one of my favorite summer treats and this was a tasty option, but it didn’t blow me away either.
Every pint contains 270 calories for the whole pint with 6 grams of fat, 90 milligrams of sodium and 38 grams of sugar.
I give this one three scoops because even though I was so excited about it the actual product was pretty average. I am definitely open to trying more flavors though and I love the concept and supporting third-generation family business.
Purchased at: Stop & Shop, West Springfield
Cost: $6.49
Worth it? TBD once I try another flavor
