CHENNAI: The temperature in the city will only increase and so will the pressure to rehydrate oneself with refreshing fruit juices, expecially if they are sold cheap.
But, residents would be well advised to make sure the fruits are not decomposed or have been bitten through by rats. Officials of the food safety department on Monday stumbled upon such fruits when they raided a shop in Jafferkhanpet.
The department, which has formed teams to carry out inspections in shops across the city for this very purpose, received information about a shop selling selling pan masala and gutka in Jafferkhanpet. Members of a team soon went there, spotted a juice shop nearby and went inside to check its FSSAI licence.
Inside, the senses of the team members were assailed by a foul smell emanating from boxes of fruits. "We checked and found that most of them were either bitten by rats or had decomposed. The shop keeper had purchased them from the Koyambedu market," said P Sathish Kumar, designated officer, food safety department, Chennai district. Three people in the shop spat out what they had been drinking and left the place. "We asked the shopkeeper to drink the juice made from these fruits. He was reluctant. We seized all the fruits and temporarily sealed the outlet. He was operating without FSSAI licence," Satish Kumar added.
The department will holding a meeting with fruit traders in Koyambedu to advise them on proper disposal of decomposed stock. "These people are buying because the traders are selling it. It should be disposed of properly," said Sathish.
People should ask shop keepers to select and cut fruits in front of them before making juices. "The jar should be washed in running water, flies should not be there, and disposable tumblers should be used."
S Srinivasan, president of Chennai Fruits Commission Agents Association, said they don't sell decomposed fruits. "Some people take away disposed fruits, we cannot be blamed for this. We need place to scientifically dispose such fruits."
