Kiara Smith's road to entrepreneurship started out of crisis.
Smith, an Oakland County resident, on July 21 will open Fresh & Pressed Juice at 3622 Rochester Road in Troy. Smith began juicing in 2019 when her 2- and 3-year-old children developed a gut health issue known as microbiome deficiency, which can lead to thyroid issues, diabetes and digestive problems. Smith and her husband, Detroit rapper Icewear Vezzo (Chivez Smith), sought out doctor's care for more than a year before she took matters into her own hands.
"I started doing research and found that juicing was the thing to do," Smith said. "It took about a month of juicing for things to turn around. My son couldn't even go to the bathroom but with the juicing everything got better.
"That was really an awful experience. As a parent, all you want to do is keep your kids happy and healthy. My son was always running and laughing. It was kind of crippling because we didn't know what to do and neither did the doctors."
Smith documented her journey and shared the results on social media. Viewers and followers took a shine to the pressed juices Smith made, which for her son consisted of organic beets, grapes and celery. The popularity of her posts pushed Smith to begin pursuing her own business.
Fresh & Pressed uses juice press machines, which use no heat and press the juices together. The juices are sold in 12-ounce plastic bottles to help reduce waste, according to Smith.
Smith is big on affirmation with her kids, and all the drink combinations are named after affirmations. The "I Am Bold" comprises pineapple, apple, ginger and plant-based protein blue spirulina, which helps with digestion. The "I Am Successful" drink consists of lemon, ginger, and apple. The "I Am Happiness" smoothie bowl is made with banana, pink pitaya, vanilla, strawberry, oat milk and agave.
"Everything came together through trial and error ultimately," Smith said. "It was a lot of trying juices at home, seeing what worked for me and my family."
Before settling on the 1,260-square-foot Troy space, Smith had her eyes on a St. Clair Shores property. She wanted something more move-in ready and found the Rochester Road space after about a year of searching.
Smith has invested about $250,000 into getting Fresh & Pressed Juice open. The new entrepreneur signed a five-year lease, with two five-year renewal options. Fresh & Pressed has a staff of nine employees. She projects annual sales of around $576,000.
Smith is entering the cold-pressed juice market at a good time. The market is expected to top $2 billion by 2028, according to market research firm Mordor Intelligence.
Smith will welcome Troy and surrounding communities into the space for more than just drinks. Events will take place that will see nutritionists and mental health professionals on-site for information and consultation. Self-care pros will offer assistance to mothers, Smith said.
"Everything begins from within," Smith said. "Self-care is important. More people are beginning to realize that, but guidance helps."
Smith, a six-year stay-at-home mom before setting out as an entrepreneur, believes the Troy space is the best spot for her business.
"There's an Orange Theory next door, so you'll have some pretty active people around all the time," Smith said. "It's a central location between my family and myself, and it's right off the freeway. I think we're in the right place."
