Cape Coral residents who are in need of a helping hand with their food supplies can find fresh fruit and vegetables three times a week at a local historic museum.

The Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library, thanks to Marjon Specialty foods, will provide a drive-thru giveaway on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. until noon, every week until further notice.

Those in need of fresh fruits and veggies can collect their 25-pound, prepackaged box filled with a variety of selections at the museum.

"It's a wonderful thing to be able to provide to the community since we're not allowed right now to do all we usually do," said the museum's event coordinator, Denise Wood.

The packages of food are covered in a film-protected box, broken down into four sections of food.

"It's a variety of vegetables and fruits," Wood said. "You have your salad vegetables, fruits, potatoes."

She hopes those in the community will help spread the word to those who have come across some financial hardship during the coronavirus pandemic.

"If you're a small family, they come once a week. If you're a large family, they come twice a week," Wood said. "We ask if they have any neighbors who are in need or large groups or organizations."

Marjon, now a division of Oakes Farms "Seed to Table" companies, reached out to the museum and officials there were more than happy to be able to provide the service to the community.

The specialty foods incorporation has been in the area since 1972 and is part of one of the largest independently owned agribusiness operations in the area, headquartered in Collier County.

Marjon brings a refrigerated semi-truck packed with prepackaged boxes to the museum on Monday and pick it up once again on Friday, replacing it with another fully stocked trailer.

Wood said they are able to provide those who need it an abundant amount of food, as the trucks are heavily stocked and can be replaced with additional food if needed.

She said the museum has reached out to places such as the Cape Coral Caring Center, countless veteran organizations and community centers.

"Right now, (the supply) is pretty unlimited," Wood said. "It's as much as we can give away."

The museum is currently working on how to resume its popular Tuesday Veteran Luncheon.

The Southwest Military Museum & Library is at 4820 Leonard St., in Cape Coral.
