BRIDGEPORT — Hungry residents may pick up a 20 pound box of fresh fruit and vegetables on Labor Day in the latest of a summerlong food giveaway.

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and last until 11:30 a.m. at Wade’s Dairy, 1316 Barnum Ave.

Harry Bell, of Color A Positive Thought which produces coloring books, is teaming with Wade’s and Street Safe to hand out the boxes.

“We’ve got apples, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, potatoes and squash — all foods for a healthy meal,” Bell said. “People can drive or walk up to the gate, no questions asked.”

He said the foods are donated by Farmers to Families.

Bell said a similar donation in August saw another 1,500 boxes given away.

“We are putting together another one for later this month which will include meat and dairy products in the boxes,” he said.

Bell said the food distribution is important in these pandemic times which have made people sick, cost people their jobs and left them hungry.

“Some people are afraid to go out to stores,” he said. “Others may have lost their jobs and don’t have the money to pay for healthy foods.”
