GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Jermale Eddie learned about juicing in 2012, while watching the documentary “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead.”

The film chronicles one man’s journey to lose weight and improve his health by drinking only fruits and vegetables for 60 days.

Eddie, 40, remembers feeling inspired when he learned about the nutritional benefits that came with increasing one’s juice intake.

By 2013, juicing had become so ingrained in his family’s life, that Eddie and his wife, Anissa, decided to make a career out of it. They opened Malamiah Juice Bar and Eatery at the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids, serving up an array of freshly squeezed juices.

Today, Malamiah is located at Studio Park, 122 Oakes St. SW. Eddie moved his business to the new location because it gave him an opportunity to have his own space, with indoor seating and an expanded food menu.

In addition to 11 types of juices and smoothies, the business sells acai bowls, salads, sandwich wraps, bagels and cinnamon bars, Eddie said.

Eddie and Anissa came up with the name Malamiah by combining the names of his three children: Malachi, Nehemiah and Josiah.

Like many restaurants, the pandemic has been tough for Malamiah Juice Bar and Eatery. Revenue is down by half when compared to pre-pandemic business levels.

“We’re still going because we don’t believe in quitting,” he said," but it’s been very rough and tough on the business and on myself and on my employees mentally and emotionally."

The juices at Malamiah are created with fresh ingredients. One of the most popular varieties is Southern Greens, which includes kale, collard greens, celery, lemon, ginger, cucumber and green apple. It costs $6 for a 12 oz. cup, and $8 for a 16 oz.

Other notable items include salads. The Jamaican Greens salad, for example, costs $8 and includes Swiss chard, brown rice, jerk style jackfruit, carrot, cucumber and peanut lime dressing.

Malamiah offers in-person dining, takeout and delivery through services such as Grubhub.

“Our customers have been what’s kept us alive,” Eddie said. “They’ve been buying bottles of juice, juices, getting them delivered. Those sales have been very well received.”

In addition to in-store services, bottles of Malamiah juice can be purchased at Bridge Street Market and Field and Fire Café.

Eddie said he wants to expand the number of stores that carry his juice.

“It’s our goal to be the first African American juice company on shelves in the region, maybe in the country,” he said. “The only way we will get there is if the community continues to support us as they do.”

Malamiah is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The juice bar can be reached at (616) 600-7744, and its website can be found here.
