By Ranjai Singh: A man from Kanpur killed a woman juice-seller because she set up her juice-cart next to his. The victim was run over by a car and then dragged for approximately 50 meters on June 8. The incident was caught on CCTV footage, based on which the police arrested five people on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Jayamanti Devi, was a resident of the Nazirabad area. She and the accused, Manoj, would set up their juice-carts in front of a hospital in the area. As informed by the victim’s son, the two would often get into heated arguments over the shared space of their business.

After the accident on June 8, police took cognizance of the matter and started an investigation. They found CCTV footage of the incident, though the car seen therein did not have a number plate.

DCP Pramod Kumar said the police arrested Manoj and four of his accomplices based on the CCTV evidence. They also confiscated the car with which the crime was committed.
“Manoj was against the placement of a neighboring juice handcart operated by the woman next to his. He therefore conspired to kill her and offered a sum of Rs 50,000 to his accomplices to get the work done,” DCP Kumar said.
"On the night of June 8, Manoj and his associates intentionally targeted the woman as she was returning, hitting her with the car before dragging her along for about 50 meters. In the presence of witnesses, they decided to flee the scene, leaving the woman injured.She died while receiving treatment," he added.
In an attempt to evade identification, the accused had removed the car's number plate. We used surveillance in multiple areas, to apprehend all those involved in the act, the DCP said.
