Summer is all about indulging in varied seasonal fruits as a refreshing and delicious way to stay hydrated and nourished. With an abundance of juicy options like watermelon, berries, and citrus fruits available in the market, consuming these seasonal delights not only provides a burst of flavour but also several health benefits.
Looks like Karisma Kapoor believes in something similar as she recently gave a glimpse of her summer treat. Guess, what is it? It’s litchi! Sharing a picture of a bowl containing freshly peeled litchis, she wrote, “Summer fruits #lololoves.”
Not just your tastebuds, but your health too will thank you for consuming litchis in summer. According to Ankita Ghoshal Bisht, dietician in charge, Primus Super Speciality Hospital, “Eating litchi during summer offers several benefits. Firstly, litchis are rich in water content, helping to keep you hydrated in the scorching heat. They are also packed with essential nutrients like vitamin C, which supports immune function and boosts collagen production for healthy skin.”
She added that litchis are a good source of dietary fibre, aid in digestion, and prevent constipation. “Additionally, they contain antioxidants that may protect against oxidative stress and inflammation. Enjoying litchis can be a refreshing and nutritious way to beat the summer heat while supporting your overall health.”
Ayurveda, too, believes that litchi has a cooling effect on the body, which helps in combating the heat and humidity of the summer season, Vikas Chawla, Ayurveda Expert, Vedas Cure, said. “It acts as a natural thirst quencher and hydrates the body, keeping it refreshed and energised. Litchi is also a rich source of vitamins, particularly vitamin C, which boosts immunity and protects against common summer ailments like colds and flu. Additionally, litchi contains antioxidants that help fight free radicals and reduce the risk of cell damage. It is also known to improve digestion and relieve constipation due to its high fibre content,” adding that litchi is a low-calorie fruit, making it a healthy snack option for those looking to maintain or lose weight during the summer months.
While litchi juice can be tasty and refreshing, it may not be as healthy as consuming the whole fruit, Bisht said. “When the fruit is juiced, it loses some of its dietary fibre content, which is important for digestion and maintaining blood sugar levels. Moreover, commercially prepared litchi juice often contains added sugars, artificial flavours, and preservatives, which can undermine its health benefits. Consuming fresh, whole litchis is generally a better option as it retains the fruit’s natural fibre and nutrients. If opting for litchi juice, it’s advisable to choose natural and unsweetened varieties,” she explained.
While litchis, as discussed, can be incredibly healthy for you, certain individuals should exercise caution or avoid consuming them. “People with diabetes should monitor their intake due to litchi’s natural sugar content, which can affect blood sugar levels. Additionally, litchis contain a naturally occurring toxin called hypoglycin A, which can be harmful, especially to young children. In regions where outbreaks of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) have occurred in children, litchis have been associated with the condition. If you or your child have a history of hypoglycemia or are at risk for AES, it is best to consult with a healthcare professional before consuming litchis,” Bisht said.
