Fruit thieves victimize Michigan farmers

Michigan farmers are seeing more problems with fruit theft.  Michigan Farm Bureau reports the latest incident involves Corey Lake Orchards near Three Rivers, where about six-thousand dollars’ worth of cherries and blueberries were taken last week.  The 250-acre specialty crop farm had already lost most of their cherries and peaches because of an early May frost.

Audrey Sebolt with Farm Bureau says these new thefts are on top of several last fall, where apples and pumpkins were stolen during the night.  She says 7,000 pounds of apples were taken from Spicer Orchards in Fenton.  Sebolt says the people stealing the fruit know where to go, when to pick the fruit, and have a market for the stolen fruit, which is worth thousands of dollars.
