The New England Patriots know that their locker room isn’t like what other teams across the NFL have. So it’s not surprising to see the interest in seeing how a player like Cam Newton will fit in.
So far, the reviews have been positive. Newton has fit in, sure. But at the same time, he brings a unique sort of energy with him.
“The dynamic he brings into the locker room and everybody embracing him, it’s the best part, because we have a unique team here,” defensive lineman Lawrence Guy said. “Once he came in, he fit right in.”
Or as tackle Isaiah Wynn put it, Newton “brings a good energy, bringing a nice juice with him.”
The Patriots are heading toward uncharted territory this season. They’ll be without Tom Brady for the first time in two decades and will be replacing key players on defense due to both free agency and COVID-19 opt-outs.
Amid one of the craziest NFL offseasons in recent memory, the news of Newton signing hit New England like a tidal wave.
But looking forward, Newton’s new teammates are excited to see what such a monumental change at the quarterback position can bring.
“During COVID, you’re trying to figure out how to bring a team together and new aspects of bringing people in and you get a person like that, big body, mobile quarterback. You’re like, ‘This is going to being exciting when we get him to practice,‘” Guys said.
It’s still another week until the Patriots defense gets to put on the pads and take on Newton directly. For now all they’ve seen is Newton’s interactions with a quarterback room that was flipped on its head when the 2015 NFL MVP signed in New England.
I think Hawaii instead of walking them open arms and no them come on to the field and hearing them talk you can see them don’t different plays out and aspects out so it’s going.
But so far, teammates say there hasn’t been tension, with quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham doing their part to make Newton feel welcome.
“I think Hoy and Stidham welcomed him with open arms,” Guy said. “Them coming onto the field and hearing them talk, you can see them throwing different plays out and aspects out.”
“It’s going to be one of those things that we can’t wait to get the pads on and to see how everything’s rolling together with Cam being here, with Hoy being here, Stidham,” Guy added.
We’ll get a chance to see how the Patriots do look when they finally put the pads on and start full training camp practices on Aug. 17.
