LAURINBURG — The Community Orchard is bursting with fruit, and is open for all of Scotland County residents to enjoy.
“The orchard is free to any Scotland County resident that wishes to go out and pick fruit,” said Michael Mandeville, community development director with the city of Laurinburg.
“We want people to come out and experience picking their own fresh fruit,” added Mandeville. “They can come anytime that they choose during the day. For safety reasons we prefer no one be out there gathering fruit at night.”
Pear, apple and fig trees are located on the property, located in Washington Park on McDougald Street.
“The pears did really good this year,” said Mandeville. “The apples are doing pretty decent too, but we don’t use any sprays or pesticides so the bugs tend to dwindle down the crop more than the pears.
“We really hope that residents take advantage of the fruit, we certainly don’t want it to go to waste,” added Mandeville.
The orchard was started in 2015.
“Before I came to hod this position, Teddy Warner was here and he is the one that got the orchard started,” said Mandeville. “He obtained a grant to cover the cost. A few trees were also given to the high school to plant on their property but we do not maintain those.
“We have seen a good bit more interest since we posted on our Facebook after we posted at the first of the month,” said Mandeville. “I’m not sure what is still out there, but there should still be quite a bit.”
Some of the fruit is hanging high and be difficult to get to.
“We hope everyone will remember safety while gathering the fruit also,” said Mandeville. “Some of the fruit may have to be shaken down or residents may have to wait until it is on the grown.
“Summer is nearing its end so before long the fruit will begin to dwindle,” continued Mandeville, “so I encourage those that are interested in getting some fruit to do so before it is all gone.
