Chronically broken cooler, moldy fruit: Restaurant inspections in Riverside, San Bernardino counties, Dec. 18-24 - San Bernardino County Sun

The Riverside and San Bernardino county health departments did not report any restaurant closures due to imminent health hazards between Dec. 18 and 24.

Non-closure inspections of note

Here are selected inspections at facilities that weren’t closed but had other significant issues.

Popeyes, at 1325 Hamner Ave. in Norco, was inspected Dec. 21 and received a failing grade of 80/B with two critical violations. When the inspector arrived, employees immediately started moving all of the food out of a cooler at the prep line. The person in charge said the cooler had been serviced over the weekend but was found to be inoperable again that morning. The inspector noted that food being at unsafe temperatures is a chronically repeated violation and this particular cooler was inoperable at both of the restaurant’s inspections earlier this year, and issued a monetary citation. Also, an employee started using a batter basket without rinsing off the ammonium sanitizer solution. Among the eight lesser violations, several employees didn’t wash hands and the inspector saw an “excessive” number of fruit flies and gnats inside — both also chronically repeated violations, and the lack of handwashing earned another citation. This was the restaurant’s third failed inspection in 13 months; it now faces a permit suspension/revocation hearing.

Pho-Ha Vietnamese Restaurant, at 385 E. Mill St. Suite 5 in San Bernardino, was inspected Dec. 21 in a mandatory follow-up after receiving a 74/C on Nov. 25. This time, it got an 84/B with one critical violation. Meat was at unsafe temperatures in a cold-holding table whose door wouldn’t close properly. Among the nine lesser violations, an employee was washing a mop in a sink meant for washing dishes; the facility did not have a dedicated mop sink.

Cock-A-Doodle Restaurant, at 12940 Central Ave. in Chino, was inspected Dec. 18 and received a grade of 80/B with two critical violations. Deli meat in a cooler was at unsafe temperatures, and there were two moldy whole cantaloupes stored among the cut fruit. Additionally, the restaurant was allowing indoor and outdoor dining, and serving customers at the bar who were not eating a meal, in violation of COVID-19 health orders.

Mariscos Mi Lindo Sinaloa, at 483 W. Valley Blvd. in Rialto, was inspected Dec. 18 and received a grade of 81/B with two critical violations. A container of carne asada cooked several hours earlier had been left out at room temperature. Also, about five knives had been put away dirty. Among the nine lesser violations, only one sink in the restaurant was functioning properly (the rest had broken knobs or no hot and/or cold water) and a tub of raw shrimp was sitting on the ground. This was the restaurant’s second B grade since 2019. The inspector returned Dec. 21 to check that the plumbing issues had been corrected. They hadn’t — the work had been rescheduled for that evening.

Updates from past weeks

Volcano Hawaii BBQ, at 140 Hidden Valley Parkway Suite E in Norco, which failed a Dec. 16 inspection and was closed because of a rodent infestation, was permitted to reopen Dec. 22. It also passed a follow-up inspection with a score of 92/A. There were no critical violations and no signs of rodent activity, but the inspector did find one live cockroach. Another follow-up was planned.

Alzahraa Gas & Mart, at 18689 Valley Blvd. in Bloomington, which had to stop selling food and beverages that were not prepackaged because of overflowing sewage and no hot water discovered in a Dec. 3 inspection, was permitted to fully reopen Dec. 18. The market still must request a rescore inspection by the end of this month because it received a C on Dec. 3.

About this list

Inspectors visit food facilities for routine inspections, follow-ups and complaint investigations. In graded inspections, the facility starts with a score of 100 and can lose between 1 and 4 points for any of about 50 health code violations. A grade of 90 or above is an A, 80-89 is a B and 79 or below is a C. Riverside County considers B and C grades to be failing; San Bernardino County does not have a pass/fail system. A facility will be closed if the inspector finds an imminent health hazard that can’t immediately be corrected.
