Thanks to the invention of the electric blender in the 1930s, smoothies started trending on the West Coast.
Americans are the top consumers of smoothies in the world. In this corner of the world, namely Brecksville, customers can get their smoothie fix at Juice Lab, located in the former Nekter Juice Bar shop at 8215 Chippewa Rd., which is scheduled to open in mid-December.
Co-operators and owners Dominic DiGeronimo and Ally Vavul said they are excited to provide their own customer service-based version of blending healthy ingredients without the restrictions of a franchise.
Independence resident DiGeronimo has plenty of experience in the food and drink business, working since he was a teenager at Chuppa’s Marketplace in Parma, owned by his grandfather, Paul Chuppa, and uncle, Paul Jr.
DiGeronimo’s mother, Babe Chuppa, owner of Babe’s Café and Bakery in Independence, provided him with summer work throughout his college years at Xavier University, where he majored in entrepreneurial studies.
His father Don is one of the owners of Independence Excavating, where DiGeronimo learned other aspects of the business world.
Vavul, also a Xavier University graduate (the place where the two met), is originally from South Bend, Ind., with a family in the restaurant supply business and restaurant/bar ventures.
At Juice Lab, DiGeronimo and Vavul agree they want a business model in which customers have an experience, not just a transaction.
“We will be able to get fresher ingredients through our family businesses,” DiGeronimo said. “We want to do things right, produce a well-made product that is nourishing, and present it with a smile.”
Vavul remembers jotting ideas down on sticky notes for the arduous process of choosing the right name.
“We narrowed it down to three, and then asked around, got opinions, informal surveys,” she said. “We wanted a name that was most marketable.”
Juice Lab intends to have an edge on the competition by adding sandwiches and salads for grab-and-go lunch combinations that are “healthy and filling, with a good value,” said DiGeronimo. Hours will be 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Learn more on Facebook and Instagram @juicelabcle.
