During the 2020 growing season, several growers hosted trials of Syngenta Vegetable Seeds’ newest yellow pepper, Leah (Y08384). According to Cameron Lyons with Syngenta, Leah has attracted the attention of many growers due to its high yield potential and XL fruit size. "Due to these outstanding results, many of these growers wanted to extend their trials of Leah and some have moved to commercial areas of production," he adds.
Good balance: Strong vigor and generativity
Leah is a very blocky yellow pepper with very thick fruit walls which can be planted from late December to the beginning of February for the Canadian greenhouse growing season.
"Most growers let one fruit set at the third axil and then removed the fruit from the next two axils. It was obvious that this first fruit demanded a lot of energy from the plants, but Leah was still able to recover quickly in the head and able to set fruits on the fifth and sixth axil," Cameron shows. "Now we see that plants are getting into a good balance with strong vigor and generativity. This will set the plants up for a successful production during hot summer conditions."
Leah was grown at a Pepper Farm in Abbotsford, BC, Canada. "By the end of week 24 we saw high yields in Leah, up to 10.6 kg/m2 from planting of beginning of January. Because production of XL fruits is in the genetics of Leah there is no need to maintain cooler temperatures. Maintaining an average day temperature of around 25 degrees on sunny days will help to keep plant balance and improve the coloration of fruits," Cameron concludes.
