Hill Brings The Juice As Racers Knock Off Belmont - MSU GoRacers

buahkamp.blogspot.com
The Murray State Racers stayed undefeated in Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday with an 82-60 victory over the Belmont Bruins at the Curb Event Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The win moved MSU (14-2) to 4-0 in conference play and stopped the Bruins' 19-game home win streak and gave them their first loss in conference play (13-4, 3-1)..

Justice Hill scored a career-high 36 points on 10-of-19 shooting from field including 8-of-11 from the 3-point line. When he added 8-of-11 from the free throw line, it marked the highest scoring game in the 2021-22 OVC season. Tevin Brown scored 18 points and with four made threes, is three from breaking the Murray State career record. Having his playing time limited to under 18 minutes because of foul trouble, KJ Williams still managed to score 13 points.

The Racers' first half box score should probably be framed. It's not often a Murray State team hits 11-of-14 from the 3-point line for 78 percent in a half. In total, MSU hit 16-of-24 from the field for a 68 percent clip. It all combined to give MSU a 48-35 lead at the halftime intermission. Hill was 6-of-6 from the 3-point line and posted 25 points in the first 20 minutes of action.

The expected Belmont push was only able to trim one point from the MSU halftime lead to 12 points with 13:41 remaining. When Williams made a dunk on a fast break, the Racers had outscored the Bruins 18-12 in the first eight minutes of the second half to grab their largest lead of the day of 19 points at 66-47 with 11:39 remaining. Hill was on his way to career night with 10:39 left, he made his eighth 3-pointer to reach 36 points.

The Racers ended the game shooting 51 percent from the field on 26-of-51, while holding the Bruins to 41 percent on 24-of-59. From the 3-point line, the Racers were 14-of-25 for 56 percent, while Belmont hit 28 percent on 5-of-23. MSU's 14 threes matches their season-high that they hit at Memphis (Dec. 10). The Racers limited their turnovers to eight.

Game Notes
  • Justice Hill's 36-point effort is a new career-high for him, topping the 26 points he scored at home against SEMO (Dec. 30).
  • Hill's 36 is the top scoring game this season in the OVC as he topped the 34 points that Eric Reed, Jr., scored against Austin Peay (Jan. 1). Hill's game is also MSU's top scoring game this season as he topped the 33 points Tevin Brown had against Chattanooga (Dec. 18) and the 32 KJ Williams scored against Cumberland (Nov. 9).
  • With 10:39 left when Hill made his eighth 3-pointer of the game, he was in rare air as he became the seventh MSU player to hit eight or more in a single game.
  • Other MSU games of a player hitting eight more include the Racers' single game record of nine by Tevin Brown (at UTM, 01-10-2019), Jonathan Stark (at South Dakota State, 12-17-2016) and Justin Burdine (home vs Eastern Kentucky, 02-21-2002). Other Racers to hit eight in a single game include Jeffery Moss (home vs UT Martin, 02-27-2016), James Singleton (home vs Eastern Illinois, 02-13-2002 ) and Don Mann (home vs Tennessee State, 02-13-1989).
  • Hill's eight 3-pointers is a single game record for an opponent at the Curb Center.
  • Tevin Brown hit four 3-point baskets tonight and now has 302 for his career as he chases down MSU all-time record holder Isaiah Canaan (2009-13) at 304 and Brown is also taking aim at the OVC record of 319 set by Austin Peay's Joe Sibbitt (1994-98).
  • The Racers held a 48-35 lead at halftime and are now 11-0 when they have the lead at halftime this season.
  • The Racers have won four in a row since their last loss (Dec. 22) at Auburn.
  • MSU has won back-to-back road games in the OVC and are 4-1 this season away from home. MSU's other road wins were at Illinois State (Nov. 16), at Memphis (Dec. 10) and at SIUE (Jan. 8).
  • The all-time series with Belmont reads the Racers with 10 wins and Belmont with 12.
  • After going 0-5 at the Curb Center when the Bruins joined the OVC, MSU finally scored their first win.
  • MSU also snapped an overall four-game losing streak to the Bruins. MSU's win was their first over Belmont since 2020 on their home court at the CFSB Center
  • Game two between the Racers and Bruins is Feb. 24 at the CFSB Center in Murray and will be aired nationally on ESPNU.
  • The Racers continue their busy two weeks with eight games in 16 days on Monday. The Racers take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day in a 3:30 p.m. tip at Lantz Arena in Charleston, Ill.
