The 2021 fruit harvest in the Czech Republic fell by five percent year-on-year to 133,867 tons. Fruit growers recorded a noticeable drop in the plum harvest. The cherry harvest was also very low. Apricots were not affected by the frost, said Radio Prague. In fact, four times more apricots were harvested than in the previous year. Over the long-term, the fruit harvest in 2021 was below average. This was announced by the spokeswoman of the Central Agricultural Control and Testing Institute, Ivana Kršková, on Wednesday.

The smaller harvest was mainly caused by a cold spring, the spokeswoman added. Hailstorms also caused above-average damage, she said. The spring frosts, however, did not affect the orchards much, said Martin Ludvík, chairman of the Czech Fruit Growers Association. According to him, unfavorable weather prevailed during the blossoming period, resulting in few bees and other pollinators. According to Ludvík, there are also fewer and fewer orchards in the Czech Republic. This, he said, is also having an impact on the harvest balance.
