Panaji: With people in Goa increasingly opting to live in apartments which have little to no open space for planting trees, the novelty of potted fruit trees comes as a welcome relief. Much along the concept of growing bonsai, fruit trees can also be grown in potted plants as was seen at this edition of the Konkan fruit festival.
For the first time the fest introduced potted trees bearing various fruits like chikoo, jackfruit, hog plums among others. “All kinds of limes, guavas, sapodilla, Kokan Bold Karonda and even avocado can be grown using this method,” said festival organiser and secretary of the botanical society of Goa, Miguel Braganca.
These are grafted plants that are placed in pots of 14 to 18 diameter instead of the ground. Braganca advises that round pots are preferable instead of square ones for this method since the square pots have a tendency to crack as the fruit tree grows.
“Periodic trimming – much like that of bonsai – is essential to maintain the potted fruit trees,” said festival organiser, Liza Pinheiro. This method of growing fruit trees is especially good for those who live in apartments and have balconies facing the west. Alternatively LED bulbs that mimic the natural light can be exposed to the crop.
“Chikoo, guava and custard apple grow very easily in these deep pots. They are very amenable to pruning and the more it’s pruned, the better it yields,” Braganca said.
Though the concept has been popular among residents of metropolitan cities, it has become popular in Goa only in the past four to five years.
“Due to the limited amount of soil in the pots, the trees can grow up to 1.5m in height. Following which, one can even plant it on open land instead of the occasional pruning or trimming to control its growth,” Braganca said.
