The fruit and vegetable shortage is causing prices to surge, say Coventry's independent shopkeepers. Business owners have spoken of their concerns as the price of items such as tomatoes and onions increases.

Arif, who runs the Halal meat centre in the heart of the city said the shortage is challenging for him at the moment.

He said: ''There is more of a shortage of tomatoes, bell peppers and onions. The markets have it, but now it's more expensive before we used to pay £8 now we pay £16 a box. We still have a lot of customers who come."

In his shop he was selling things for 3 pieces for £1, now he sells some things for £3.99 a kilo for some fruits.

Another shopkeeper in the city has also raised concerns over high prices. Maksdoo Atia runs ADG Enterprises on the high street. Mr Atia said that the prices are just too high now.

''The prices are high, customers are arguing with me about why the prices are so high. It's hard for me right now.

"A lot of my customers are African and Asian and have always supported me. We used to sell tubs for £1 either fruit or veg, now I have had to increase this to £2.

"There are no good quality products either, before it was good, now quality wise, it's very bad.

"Every day, I have new customers, that buy vegetables from me, especially from the African community who I love."

Maksdoo Atia said he has been forced to raise prices due to the fruit and vegetable shortage

In February, shoppers saw a shortage across the UK, of fruit and vegetable supplies in popular supermarkets such as Asda and Morrisons, caused by poor weather conditions abroad in countries such as Spain and Morocco.

This in turn has caused mayhem for supermarket chains as they are unable to provide the stock for customers. There has been a shortage of fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, raspberries, cauliflower, lettuce and salad bags.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) have said that these fruit and vegetable shortages could be the 'tip of the iceberg' as the reliance on imports has left the UK in a very risky situation.

The fruit and vegetable shortages are only set to last a few weeks until supermarkets can find other suppliers.
