Liquid Nirvana 'saved my life' a customer said, as the smoothie, juice bar opens new CT location - Hartford Courant

Just like her oncologist husband, Rosy Kapur’s passion in life is improving health outcomes for others.

But her Rx is in fresh fruits and vegetables at her juice and smoothie bars, Liquid Nirvana, which just opened a third shop, this one in Farmington.

“Our goals are the same, our medicine is different,” Kapur said, referring to husband, Dr. Dinesh Kapur, whom she said supports her endeavor as a doctor and spouse.

Kapur, who has carefully selected teams at each store, is hands-on and visits all three stores daily.

She started in the business nine years ago and in addition to the newest location at 190 Main St. has stores in Avon and Glastonbury.

The business already has a strong fan base of customers seeking to address health issues through smoothies, juices and cleanses. Some want to lose weight, gain energy, bolster the immune system and feel healthier overall.

Customer Jeff Shaw said he lost 100 pounds after 58 days of consuming only a customized drink containing products such as kale, celery, cucumbers and Granny Smith apples.

Shaw said he did the regime with the blessing of his general practitioner and cardiologist, with blood tests every two weeks.

He has since gone off four medications and cut another two down to a quarter of what he once took. Formerly prediabetic, his A1C went from 6.6 to 5.2.

“That place changed my whole life,” he said of Liquid Nirvana. “It saved my life really.”

Now Shaw said he’s eating food again – all healthful, as his cravings for junk have disappeared.

He’s lost 145 pounds since October, he said.

Once an IT manager, Kapur became interested in exploring the healthful drink business because her husband often spoke of nutrition as a route to helping patients, including boosting the immune system to lessen the side effects of chemotherapy.

Kapur said she started thinking about nutrition without sugar.

“I wanted something that was clean.” Kapur said. “If I had bought an ice cream store I would sell tons.”

So she did a lot of research, bought a mixer and started making smoothies every day at home.

She hosted lots of smoothie parties, experimenting with recipes and after about a year created a menu.

Kapur said everything in the store is unsweetened and it’s like a “mini grocery store” in fresh kale, spinach, celery, carrots, apples, strawberries, bananas, papaya, mango and pineapple.

What she loves most about visiting each location daily is connecting with customers.

“I love the people part. Hearing the stories just makes me feel good,” Kapur said. “I see a customer and get a smile on my face.”

The business isn’t about the money, Kapur said, as financially, she doesn’t have to work.

“It’s what can I do to add value?” to people’s lives, she said.

She remembers one customer with stage four cancer telling her that he felt stronger after one of her drinks.

Elizabeth Phillips Johnson, 32, has been a regular customer for five years, finding the fresh juices made her feel better and look better.

But she upped it a few notches before her December 2022 wedding because she wanted the dress to fit perfectly.

To accomplish that, Johnson started a regimen of juicing and cleansing. She lost 25 pounds, felt more focused, slept better and was able to exercise more because she had less inflammation.

“It changed my life,” Johnson said of the pre-wedding treatment. “There’s plenty of juices out there but they’re probably not as fresh. What I love is how they customize it.”

She also likes the warmth of the place.

“Every person who walks into that store, Rosy knows them by name,” she said.

Johnson said she tried juicing herself at home, but found the expense and work wasn’t worth it.

The new store is about 1,000 square feet with six tables and Kapur describes the vibe as “peaceful” and “Zen,” and “fun” at the same time.

“The team is respectful,” she said. “We pick college kids who have that sensitivity.”
