Experts warn against having ‘detox juices made from blending fruits and vegetables’; here’s why - The Indian Express

Many of us regularly consume fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies to detox the body, and keep it healthy. But, according to hepatologist Abby Philips, consuming a blend of fruits and raw vegetables can prove to be harmful to those with pre-existing liver disease. The expert — popularly known as the TheLiverDoc on Twitter — took to the microblogging site to share that he saw a patient, for the second time this week, with a “kidney injury” after “daily consumption of fruit vegetable juice at home”.

Please don’t mix fruits and a whole lot of raw green and coloured veggies into a blender and make yourself a detox juice if you have pre-existing liver disease, Dr Philips tweeted.

“A blend of gooseberries, beetroot, spinach, and green leaves along with a host of citrus fruits is a new fad that’s developing after WhatsApp and YouTube ‘doctors’ have been promoting them as ‘liver health’ options. Please don’t do it. It can cause OXALATE KIDNEY INJURY and the kidneys take a LONG time to recover,” he warned.

As such, considering that many people swear by such blends to lose weight and stay healthy, we contacted experts to learn more. While agreeing that fruits and vegetables juices have become a common on-the-go meal option, experts advise caution when it comes to combining different veggies and fruits, especially for those who have liver or kidney diseases.

“This becomes a concern because, in cases of liver or kidney diseases, the metabolism of certain nutrients becomes critical. Therefore, it is important to know what kinds of vegetables or fruits you are choosing to blend for a juice or smoothie,” said registered dietitian Garima Goyal, adding that juicing also leads to the production of oxalate in the body.

Concurring, Dr Shrey Srivastav, MD (Internal Medicine), Sharda Hospital, said that Oxalate Nephropathy (ON) — which occurs due to such oxalate production — is defined by a sudden and/or long-term decrease in kidney function associated with the deposition of calcium oxalate crystals in kidney tubules.

Major dietary sources of oxalate include leafy green vegetables (e.g., spinach), chocolate, rhubarb, beets, chard, tea, nuts, and wheat bran. Foods rich in vitamin C and amino acids break down and form oxalate crystals in the kidneys, and mixing fruits with raw green and coloured vegetables will only enhance that process, further causing issues, Dr Srivastav added.

Dr Parag Dashatwar, senior gastroenterologist and hepatologist, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad mentioned that detox juices can also cause gastrointestinal problems, such as hyperacidity, bloating, and diarrhoea.

“Complex medical problems such as liver disease can be difficult to understand, and often lack quick and simple solutions. This leads to dissatisfaction and distrust of conventional medicine. Pseudoscience in the name of alternative medicines, folk remedies and detox often exploit these vulnerabilities. They are perceived as being more holistic, natural and less harmful than conventional medicine. There is little to no scientific evidence to support the idea that detox juice can effectively remove toxins from your body,” said Dr Dashatwar.

According to him, ironically, it can worsen the pre-existing liver damage or even “cause liver damage when none existed previously”.
