PORTAGE, MI -- Looking out for future generations, volunteers planted fruit trees on public land in Kalamazoo County this week.
Volunteers from ACT Foundation USA, in collaboration with Rob and Melanie Walton Foundation and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, planted the trees Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Gourdneck State Game Area in Portage.
The plantings include 30 apple trees, five pear trees and five plumb trees.
“In addition to providing shelter and green cover to Mother Earth, fruit-bearing trees also provide food to humans, animals, birds, and continue to serve generations,” ACT Foundation USA Team Lead for Michigan Tina Arya told MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette.
The trees they planted Tuesday are already several years old, Arya said, and organizers expect them to produce fruit next spring.
“We are planting trees that are about six or seven feet tall,” Arya said. “Next year they will be bearing fruit and the fruits will be available for people to come and pick and consume.”
The space is meant to be a resource for people who do not have the resources to buy fresh fruit, she said. The trees were planted in a place so that people can access them, but organizers also wanted to make sure animals also have access to the fruit, Arya said, which is why they chose this location.
The trees were planted in the far northwest corner of the Gourdneck State Game Area’s largest “main unit,” in the 4600 block of Vanderbilt Drive, on the south side of the road. A small parking area on Vanderbilt Drive is between the intersections with Lori Court and Angling Road
The work is part of the Fruit Tree Plantation Drive, an effort to plant trees across the globe that began last year, with a goal to plant 100,000 trees. The first year, they passed 50,000, and they are now passed 73,000, Arya said.
The work is all done by volunteers, she said.

Large trees growing today may have been planted by people in past generations, Arya said.
“Now we have to take care of the future generations,” she said. “This is how we do it.”
The group plans to collaborate with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to find additional sites in Southwest Michigan for future plantings, Arya said. The group is looking for support from others to continue its mission and for future plantings.
ACT Foundation USA is a registered Sec 501(c)(3) organization, according to the group. It was founded by Mohanji, who describes himself as a friend of the world and a person trying to raise the awareness of generations from selfishness to selflessness, Arya said. Mohanji’s sustenance movement through the fruit tree plantation drive is meant to have a positive impact on the environment and all beings, Arya said.
