ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — An FDA investigation into high lead levels in WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit pouches is continuing, but the probe has turned up some disturbing information.
A nationwide food recall of the pouches started, in part, because of a concerning case in Western North Carolina.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released the recall warning about WanaBana Brand Apple Cinnamon Puree pouches on Oct. 28, 2023.
NORTH CAROLINA CASE TRIGGERS NATIONWIDE INVESTIGATION, RECALL ON FRUIT POUCHES
The recall came after a joint investigation with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services into cases of elevated blood lead levels in children in Catawba, Cleveland and Madison counties, according to the state health department.
The FDA has now confirmed one theory about the high lead levels is that the cinnamon contamination was possibly intentional, a result of "economically motivated adulteration."

"As this is an ongoing investigation, the FDA can only confirm this is one of the theories at this time. Additional investigation needs to occur before FDA reaches any conclusions. The FDA will continue to keep the public updated as the investigation unfolds. Again, the FDA can confirm that this is one of the theories the agency is exploring at this time," an FDA spokesperson said in a statement.
The lead levels in the fruit pouches were so high a 14-month-old Madison County boy was nearly poisoned.
