Cinnamon applesauce pouches linked to illness in more than 60 children – including some in Alabama – may have been tainted intentionally, federal officials said.

Politico reported Jim Jones, Deputy Commission for Human Foods for the Food and Drug Administration,  said the investigation is underway but “so far all of the signals we’re getting lead to an intentional act on the part of someone in the supply chain and we’re trying to sort of figure that out.”

“My instinct is they didn’t think this product was going to end up in a country with a robust regulatory process,” Jones told Politico. “They thought it was going to end up in places that did not have the ability to detect something like this.”

The CDC previously released a health alert in connection to high blood lead levels in children who had consumed WanaBrea brand apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches, Schnucks brand cinnamon applesauce pouches and Weis brand cinnamon applesauce pouches. The products, sold online and in stores, were linked to illnesses in 14 states. Among the reported symptoms were headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, change in activity level and anemia.

All of the packages were produced by the same facility in Ecuador and an inspection of that facility is underway.

There’s no safe level of lead exposure but the CDC uses a market of 3.5 micrographs per deciliter to identify children with higher levels than most, the AP reported. The affected children’s blood levels ranged from 4 to 29 micrograms per deciliter.
