Judge Hodgman on Stealing Yard Fruit - The New York Times

Georgia writes: While walking around our neighborhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, my partner, Luke, often stops to steal raspberries from people’s yards. I think this is unethical. Luke disagrees and thinks this fruit is somehow free. Please help me.

You wrote me back in July, and I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. I had some stuff going on. In any case, July is the beginning of the raspberry season in the Pacific Northwest, and I hope Luke survived until the end of it. What he’s doing isn’t just unethical: It’s trespassing. I would allow it if he first knocked on the raspberry-bush owners’ doors and asked them, “May I eat your yummy berries, please?” because that would a) constitute consent and b) humiliate Luke. But we’ll have to wait for a Covid vaccine first. Until then, plant your own bush, Luke! Then you can live your values and give fruit away to any passing stranger.
