buahkamp.blogspot.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – For May, we tried an assortment of beers that include a few crazy styles. Alcohol this month ranges from 4.3% to 9.3%. All the beers should be available in Greater Cleveland retail distribution. We’ll list our favorite at the end. Email us and let us know what you like or don’t enjoy, or offer an out-of-region beer you’ve seen in local distribution we should sip. Cheers!

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Fool's Gold

Fool’s Gold

Rusty Rail Brewing Co., Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania; Imperial Hefeweizen, 8%

Tastes much more like hazelnut than peanut butter. The banana notes are there with the style. Interesting take, and much higher in alcohol than typical hefeweizen. This ramps up the style quite a bit.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Shiner Strawberry Blonde

Shiner Strawberry Blonde

Spoetzl Brewery, Shiner, Texas; Blonde Ale with fruit, 4.3%

Fresh strawberry in a light-bodied beer. Strawberry stays across the palate, and it finishes fairly dry with just a bit of hops rearing their head on the tail end.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Baltimore Blonde

Guinness Baltimore Blonde

Guinness Brewing Co., Baltimore, Blonde Ale, 5%

Sweet and tangy with a little orange and breadiness from the malt. It seems every few years Guinness tries to do a little reinventing.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Cart Horse

Old Nation Cart Horse IPA

Old Nation Brewing Co., Williamston, Michigan; 7%

Slight orange flavor with hops coming out more on the far end of the finish in this hazy New England-style IPA. Fair amount of pine emerges. Love the how-to-drink instructions on the side of the can, telling folks how to mix the sediment. A new brewery for us to try. This beer is part of the brewery’s New Orthodox IPA series. The brewery also breaks down the hops on the can, distinguishing between those in the boil and dry hops (those used later in the brewing hops and intended for aroma). IBU: 60. Hops: Equinox, Mosaic. Dry hops: Mosaic, Citra, Amarillo.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

B-43

Old Nation B-43 IPA

Old Nation Brewing Co., Williamston, Michigan; 7%

Orange notes, and overall slightly similar to Cart Horse but the difference is more pine and resin, especially on the back end. IBU: 65. Hops: Calypso, Amarillo, Citrus. Dry hops: Citra, Amarillo, Simcoe.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Boss Tweed

Old Nation Boss Tweed IPA

Old Nation Brewing Co., Williamston, Michigan; 9.3%

This Double IPA has notes of orange – but not pithy – and a nice burn on the end. It’s hearty and hazy. The brewery opened in 2015. IBU: 68. Hops: Magna, Simcoe, Citra, Mosaic. Dry hops: Simcoe, Citra, Mosaic, Azzacca.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

M-43

Old Nation M-43 IPA

Old Nation Brewing Co., Williamston, Michigan; 6.8%

Deliciously balanced, thisNew England-style IPA is our favorite of the quartet. Very smooth, some citrus but not like a tropical fruit storm. IBU: 65. Hops: Calypso, Amarillo, Citra. Dry hops: Citra, Amarillo, Simcoe. (Here’s more on the success of this beer.)

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Resist

Resist

The Brewing Projekt, Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Tangerine Milkshake India Pale Ale, 7.17%

Orange sherbet really hits you in the nose and palate (imagine tangerine whipped into a frozen treat) with hops tasting like they are time-released, coming out on the far back end of the finish. Made with milk sugar, Citra and Mosaic hops, tangerine and vanilla. Very intriguing ale, one I grew to like.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Pineapple Farm

Pineapple Farm

Coronado Brewing Co., Coronado, California; Hazy India Pale Ale, 6.8%

Pineapple is fairly faint not cloying. Brewed with pineapple and lactose as well as Simcoe, Azzacca and Amarillo hops. Tasted overly carbonated.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Blueberry Lemonade Shandy

Blueberry Lemonade Shandy

Saugatuck Brewing Co., Douglas, Michigan; Shandy, 5%

Blueberry is faint but does a nice job tempering the lemon, which is clean tasting. Slight tartness, smooth, will be nice summer sipper. Good mix.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Birthday Suit

Birthday Suit

Rusty Rail Brewing Co., Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania; ale, 7.5%

Aptly named. Creamy, this “birthday cake inspired ale” really does evoke a classic sheet cake, no doubt. Very creative. Brewed with lactose and vanilla. Sweet but not like an overly sugary tasting chocolate Stout. So you can have your cake and drink it, too.

For our May review, we sipped a dozen beers, ranging from fruit ales, IPAs, some crazy styles and more.

Hawaii Five Ale

Destihl Hawaii Five Ale

Destihl Brewery, Normal, Illinois; Blonde Ale, 6.4%

This ale is brewed with pineapple, coconut, mango, peach and guava – so we expected a tropical bomb. The fruit is loud and clear, and balanced. We found pineapple and coconut the most dominant, with peach in the background a bit. Lighter, refreshing summer ale for those who like tropical flavors but not necessarily hop bombs.

This month’s favorite: Old Nation’s M-43.

Our reviews: Most of the beers we buy come from Northeast Ohio retail shops and stores. We choose from Lizardville in Copley, plus Heinen’s, Red, Wine & Brew; Acme, Giant Eagle, Mustard Seed, Whole Foods and others.
