Health officials in the US are telling doctors to be careful and watch for signs of lead poisoning in kids after at least 22 toddlers in 14 states got sick from eating tainted pouches of cinnamon apple puree and applesauce that had lead in them.
Kids between 1 and 3 years old were affected, and at least one child had a blood lead level that was eight times higher than the normal level, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
CDC uses a measure of 3.5 micrograms per deciliter to identify children with higher levels than usual. In this case, the affected children had blood lead levels ranging from 4 to 29 micrograms per deciliter.
The symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, changes in activity level, and anemia.
The illness is part of a outbreak linked to pouches of fruit puree marketed under the brands WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree, Schnucks, and Weis cinnamon applesauce pouches.
Children who are affected may show no symptoms, experts said.
The contamination of food with heavy metals like lead can happen through various means, such as from the soil, air, water, or industrial processes, according to American Academy of Pediatrics.
As of November 7, cases have been reported in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.
