A new study has found that a popular fruit could help reduce the risk of dementia for certain middle-aged individuals.

The University of Cincinnati suggests that incorporating strawberries into your daily diet could help reduce the likelihood of developing the disease.

The study's findings were recently published in the journal Nutrients.

Over a span of 12 weeks, researchers conducted a study with 30 overweight participants who had reported mild cognitive impairment.

The participants were instructed to refrain from consuming berries, except for a daily supplement powder mixed with water during breakfast.

The participants, aged between 50 and 65, were divided into two groups - one group received a powder equivalent to one cup of whole strawberries, while the other group received a placebo.

The researchers closely monitored the participants' long-term memory, mood, and metabolic health.

The results showed that those in the strawberry powder group performed better on a word-list learning test and experienced a notable reduction in depressive symptoms.

Robert Krikorian, a professor emeritus in the UC College of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, said: "Both strawberries and blueberries contain antioxidants called anthocyanins, which have been implicated in a variety of berry health benefits such as metabolic and cognitive enhancements."

He added: "There is epidemiological data suggesting that people who consume strawberries or blueberries regularly have a slower rate of cognitive decline with aging."

Krikorian emphasized that strawberries also contain ellagitannins and ellagic acid, known for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties.

Krikorian suggested that the strawberries in the study may have improved cognitive function by reducing inflammation in the brain.

He said: "Executive abilities begin to decline in midlife, and excess abdominal fat, as in insulin resistance and obesity, will tend to increase inflammation, including in the brain."

He continued: "So, one might consider that our middle-aged, overweight, prediabetic sample had higher levels of inflammation that contributed to at least mild impairment of executive abilities.

"Accordingly, the beneficial effects we observed might be related to moderation of inflammation in the strawberry group."

Krikorian recommended that future research should involve a larger number of participants and explore different strawberry doses.

The university disclosed that the research was supported by the California Strawberry Commission, which provided funding and donated strawberry and placebo powders.

However, the commission had no involvement in the study's design, data collection, analysis, or publication of the results.
