Juice Wells, Spencer Rattler give strongest hints yet about their Gamecock futures - The State

Will they or won’t they be back?

Two of South Carolina’s offensive stars gave pretty strong indications Monday of where they’ll be in 2024, with one going as far as saying he’ll be back in garnet and black.

Said wide receiver Antwane “Juice” Wells via X (formerly Twitter): “Clearing the air, I’m not playing and not holding out for the NFL draft. I’ll be back next year…”

Wells has missed most of the season with a foot injury, a year after leading the team with 68 catches for 928 and six touchdowns.

Head coach Shane Beamer hadn’t fully declared the senior receiver done for the year, saying as recently as Sunday that Wells could still play in 2023.

“I know people think I’m lying about this and just making up stuff,” Beamer said on his Sunday teleconference. “But there’s a chance. We’ll see how the week goes. And if Juice was 100% done for the year, I would’ve announced that.”

Earlier Monday, starting QB Spencer Rattler accepted an invite to play in the Senior Bowl, the top showcase for NFL prospects. Accepting an invite to the Senior Bowl isn’t a guarantee (1) that a player will play in the game and (2) doesn’t 100% mean he won’t return to college.

Rattler, who could return for another season of college football, is expected by most outsiders to leave for the pros. South Carolina produced and posted an NFL hype video for their QB just two weeks ago.

Rattler has started every game at QB for South Carolina in his two seasons in Columbia. In 2023 he has 3,074 passing yards to go with 19 touchdowns. He also has four rushing scores.

Breakout receiver Xavier Legette, who is out of eligibility, also accepted a Senior Bowl invite, the Gamecocks announced Monday. Legette replaced and surpassed Wells’ productivity in the lineup, catching 65 passes for 1,187 with at least one game to go.

South Carolina (5-6) wraps up the regular season this Saturday against rival Clemson (7:30 p.m., SEC Network), with bowl eligibility on the line for the Gamecocks.
