Fruit puree recall expands: These pouches might be contaminated, FDA warns - NJ.com

Three companies are now recalling their fruit puree pouches due to elevated levels of lead, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

At least seven illnesses in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri and North Carolina were linked to the tainted fruit puree pouches as of Nov. 1, 2023, federal officials say.

The companies involved in the recall include Schnuck Markets Inc. of St. Louis, WanaBana and the Weis supermarket chain.

The FDA updated its recall notice Friday, saying that two state agencies in North Carolina are investigating reports of four children with lead levels high enough to show toxicity in their blood.

The recall of WanaBana fruit puree pouches began shortly after four children were found to have elevated lead levels in their blood.

The FDA urges consumers not to eat the recalled purees and throw them out. They also recommend that consumers contact their health care providers if they notice any symptoms of lead toxicity after eating the purees.
