Fruit Recalled Across the US Due to Listeria Outbreak - Food & Wine

A California produce company is voluntarily recalling some of its fruit products following an outbreak of listeria, which led to the death of one person and 10 hospitalizations since 2018.

On Friday, November 17, the Food and Drug Administration published its alert, including the company’s announcement, which read it’s “voluntarily recalling peaches, plums, and nectarines sold in retail stores between May 1 and November 15, 2022, and between May 1 and November 15, 2023.” The fruit, it noted, is being recalled as it has the “potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes,” which can lead to serious illness or death, especially in those with compromised or weak immune systems.

The fruit was distributed nationwide and sold at retail stores as individual pieces with several PLU stickers or in other consumer packaging, and sold between May 1 and November 15, 2022, and between May 1 and November 15, 2023. The PLU stickers include the following:

  • Yellow peach: 4044 or 4038
  • White peach: 4401
  • Yellow nectarine: 4036 or 4378
  • White nectarine: 3035
  • Red plum: 4042
  • Black plum: 4040

The recall, the company added, is only for “conventionally grown fruit,” not for any of its organic produce, and its peaches, plums, and nectarines that are currently available for sale at retail stores are not included in this recall.

Additionally, the company added the important note that, although the recalled fruit is no longer available in retail stores, “consumers may have frozen the recalled fruit at home for later use.” So, consumers are encouraged to check their freezers for any of the recalled fruit and to discard it immediately. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention additionally recommended anyone who believes they had stored contaminated fruit to clean their refrigerator or any containers holding the fruit, as well as any surfaces it may have touched, as “Listeria can survive in the refrigerator and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.” Those with any further questions can contact the company directly at 844-483-3867.
